What would happen if Manuel de Falla’s scores were reimagined today, in the twenty-first century, by a musician unconstrained by stylistic boundaries while remaining deeply respectful of tradition?

The answer is Imagined Falla, a project by Moisés P. Sánchez, one of the most original voices on the contemporary European music scene. In this unique programme, the Spanish pianist, composer, and arranger invites audiences to rediscover the refined, richly nuanced, and deeply expressive legacy of the great composer from Cádiz through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Created to mark the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla’s birth (1876–1946), Sánchez’s project approaches Falla’s music as a living, malleable artistic substance. His reinterpretations extend beyond the classical tradition, drawing inspiration from jazz, French Impressionism, contemporary harmonic language, and even symphonic rock, while preserving the essential spirit of the original works.

For Sánchez, Falla’s compositions become the starting point for imaginative arrangements distinguished by their harmonic richness, structural sophistication, and expressive freedom. The programme combines iconic masterpieces such as El amor brujo with lesser-known and rarely performed works, including the Mazurka and Nocturno.

Improvisation is woven organically into the musical narrative. Joined by two internationally acclaimed musicians—violinist Ana María Valderrama and double bassist Pablo M. Caminero—Moisés P. Sánchez creates an engaging musical dialogue that results in a vibrant and compelling performance. Together, they reveal both the unmistakably Spanish character and the more abstract, pan-European dimensions of Falla’s fascinating musical world.
